The Pill and U

You just had a child, and you want to have a gap before having the second one.

In our previous section on pregnancy and prevention, we had talked about various methods of birth control/contraception.

In this article we will talk more about birth control pills, also called The Pill.

Oral Contraceptive Pills/ Birth control pills are easily available, quick to use, and effective. These pills have undergone 30 years of intensive research (second only to aspirin-the most extensively drug studied ever). The birth control pill, as stated earlier in previous post contains hormones estrogen and progestin, similar to hormones naturally available in the body. It stops the egg from leaving the ovary every month, and makes it difficult for man’s sperm to enter the womb and meet the egg.

Please Note that The birth control pill should be started during the first five days of menstrual cycle and should be taken every day at same time.

Side effects of Birth Control Pill

Birth Control pills are safe for women of all ages, and can be started at any time, if not already pregnant. The pill when used on a regular basis also protects against ovarian and endometrial cancer, and anaemia.

Also they do not add any body weight (against the common myth that the pill causes massive weight gain).

However some women experience tenderness in breasts, nausea or mild headaches. Though these symptoms are only temporary, if they persist, a doctor needs to be consulted. Also if u have a health problem like severe diabetes, high blood pressure, a history of blood clots or a heart disease, get a doctor to screen you before you take the pill.

Types of Birth Control Pills

The Drug Controller of India has decreed following brands as safe for use in India: Mala-D, Apsara, Pearl, Ecroz, Choice, Ovral-L, and Novelon.

A very common question that confronts women using birth control pill is, what if a pill is missed? Well, if a pill is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible and the next day’s pill taken at usual time. If two pills are missed, two pills each day should be taken and then one pill a day as usual. Condoms should be used as a backup method for seven days. If three or more pills are missed, then discard the pack and use other methods such as condoms or diaphragms till the next menstrual cycle.

Also remember that it is always advisable that you consult a gynaecologist before taking the birth control pill. However if you hav no time to visit a doctor, remember that you cannot start taking the pill in the middle of the cycle. Start on the first day of your period and continue taking it as indicated. In the following month and thereafter, begin the pill from fifth day of your period.

But consult the doctor as soon as you can.
