Having sex can be a very loving and special experience between two people. But not only might unprotected sex give you a sexually transmitted disease or cause pregnancy, you also can get hurt emotionally because of the strong feelings involved. As I was researching about the topic, I found that ‘unwanted pregnancy’ is quite common among teens. Whether you’re 20 years old or 40, married or unmarried, rich or poor, an unplanned pregnancy can turn your life upside down and throw all your plans out the window.

No form of contraceptive methods are 100% effective. However, if you are correctly using one of the contraceptive methods described below, the risk can be quite small.

There are two main types of contraceptive methods:

Hormone methods: These are usually forms of female contraception. Some common hormone methods include: birth control pills and Depo-Provera shots. The hormones stop the egg from leaving the ovary and make the mucus in the vagina too thick for sperm to move in. They prevent pregnancy 99% of the time.

Barrier methods:The condom, caps and diaphragms are barrier methods. The condom blocks the sperm from getting to the egg. If used correctly, condoms prevent pregnancy 85% of the time.

To avoid any kind of risk, it is always advised to use a combination of the two contraceptive methods described above.

In this section, we will explore each of the popular (and not so popular) contraceptive methods in detail:

Birth Control Pills (Also called The Pill): A form of contraceptive tablets, they work by making the mucus of vagina too thick for sperm to move in, thereby reducing chances of fertilization. Birth control pills are an effective method of female contraception, however these pills have to be taken on a daily basis.

The Combined Pill: Another form of female contraception (contraceptive tablets), these pills contain synthetic forms of hormones estrogen and progestogen, which interfere with a women’s regular menstrual cycle, canceling out ovulation, and hence prevent conception. This pill does so by stopping the ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulating) each month. For this contraceptive method to be effective, the pills have to be taken on a daily basis and at around same time.
